reasons that the psalms are so popular is that they manage to put into words the whole range of human feelings (from joy and peace to anger and vengeance) and offer them to God in worship. But they are certainly not commands to be obeyed! Even something as seemingly clear-cut as the command, ‘You shall not kill’ (Exod 20:13, RSV) requires interpretation. Does it apply to animals? Does it forbid capital punishment? What about war? Should all Christians be pacifists? Though there is something appealing
